IDYLL – Siesta Key

For several years, I visited a beach of white sands in Sarasota, Florida.  Siesta Key attracts people from a wide range of backgrounds, as well as those who choose it as their retirement destination. The beach is almost always busy, and it provides a fascinating setting to observe subtle patterns in human behavior.  IDYLL – Siesta Key offers a contemplative view of human interaction in a shared public space. This series explores the subtleties of coexistence in a place where the white sands become a common ground for all.

The images focus on small moments of leisure, introspection, and togetherness, against the backdrop of an expansive, near-minimalist coastal environment. The quartz white sands and muted skies function as a stage where interactions unfold, allowing colors, gestures, and spatial relationships to emerge.

This work aims to suggest the complexities that arise when diverse people share a space. The presence of an Amish child observing other children play from a distance, an African American woman moving against the flow of passersby, and groups that reflect subtle separations in posture and activity hint at broader societal notions. Yet, the prevailing atmosphere remains one of harmony.

IDYLL – Siesta Key invites viewers to reflect on the nature of social interaction as a layered experience where questions of belonging, movement, and observation continuously shift. Through the lens of an immigrant and an American citizen, IDYLL – Siesta Key is a meditation on how public spaces can reflect broader societal narratives.

I chose to work on this series at this time because I observed in Siesta Key a harmony among people from different backgrounds that I believe is currently under threat.

IDILIO – Siesta Key
